The entire speedo system works fine in warm weather, except the needle bounces a wee bit.

I had forgot it doesn't like the cold.

Since I owned it, in the coldest months the speedo, from time to time would make a loud, vibrating, gear chattery rotational noise. And it causes the needle to bounce 10mph indicated worth either way of actual speed.

When the interior of the vehicle would warm up it would stop at least for the 1st winter or two I drove it.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, It was pretty bad last winter. Sometimes the speedo would make a heck of a chatter and the needle would max out past 100 indicated mph. It eventually broke the needle.

Again come warm weather last spring it went away.

I had forgot about the issue but it did it's chattering thing for just a moment this am.

So, anybody know what exactly causes this and how to fix it right off the bat? Or a strong suspicion of what I should tear into/replace first?

Thanks!

If this is on a gen I have you replaced your speedo cable yet? It's an all mechanical system so I'm suspecting that's where you issue lies. HTH.

I'd first make sure that the speedometer cable is not frayed and is properly lubricated. Pull the housing off both ends and then pull the cable itself. If its not frayed or damaged, then lube it up, put it back together, and get a new speedometer. Others might have better advice but that's how I'd tackle it.

Inspect the cable housing for kinks and pinches.
Pull the cable and check for dried lube and fraying.
Inspect the driven gear on the tcase end for damage to the gear.
Lube the cable with a lube type that does not stiffen when cold.

The needle jumping you have seen is the cable binding and releasing.

Thanks a million.

So if I put in another speedo, How to I get the odometer to match the original one in it now? I looked for this info in the FSM to no avail.

Thanks.

The speedo itself is rarely the problem - almost always the cable. If you want to make the miles match, you have to run the speedo with a drill or something for a lot of hours to run the odo up, or take it to a speedo shop and have them set it. The only speedo shop I know of is in Alpharetta, GA, Speedometer Repair Service.

Kris (aka Ghostraider) has a speedo rebuilding business. His website is www.speedometer.org.
