How much play? How are you measuring it? Just to be sure you're doing it right in the first place... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" />

Follow the FSM procedures for the preload and final install. If you can change the front brakes, then you can do this. As long as they are actually worn, you should be okay to tighten them up. If that doesn't work, it's the same process to put new ones in.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Off-road I can grab the top of the wheel with the vehicle on the ground and push and pull it back and forth and feel and hear a very small amount of play in the hub, no measurement done..... my whole reason for trying to correct this is that I have some front end noise when on rough terrain and I am trying to eliminate everything that could be causing it....

Monty, I looked in my manual and I'm guessing I would need to tear down to the lock nut and just bump it tight a 1/2 turn or so what you think???

I was taught to measure it by grabbing the top and bottom of the tire and moving it back and forth (top in while bottom out and vice versa) to check for the amount of deflection. Should be very little. iirc less than 1/8" but I maybe someone else can chime in here since I've only done the bearings a couple of times and only did the check the 1st time which was 5+ years ago. the 2nd time we did the bearings because they were worn and noisy.

HTH.

After a bearing repack and tightening to spec, I still can see and feel a tiny bit of wiggle at the hubs while rocking top and bottom of tire. Like maybe 1mm of movement. Most people told me that was normal. You could try snugging up your lock nut a smidge if you have more movement than that.
