To be clear, many times you have to back up to disengage 4x4, particulary if you have gone fast, wheeled hard, ect as it binds up the coupling. Honestly most modern 4x4s tend to require a short back up to escape 4x4, not due to hubs, but driveline bind. I have to do it almost every time on my Titan as an example.


I do not have to do this with my '95. Like, ever.

I use the unlocked 4hi mode quite a bit on the highway this time of year - I generally shift to neutral on the trans, then shift back to 2wd, then put it back in gear. This seems to be the quickest way to unlock the system at speed, and the light stops flashing at me.
