Thanks LT. Probably overkill for me, as I don't have a winch and my stereo isn't stadium-grade. Plus, with the more widespread use of LED's, overall eventual use would stay low. We'll see, though.

A more serious look at my cooling fan blade, and I'm thinking of replacing it. It may also be an item for other users to check. On the hub, between the blades, I appear to have cracks in the plastic, and it looks to be between every blade. That's not something I want to have to deal with on a trail.

I picked up my tap at Grainger yesterday. A couple of my belts came today. I expect the harmonic balancer, idler pulley and another belt tomorrow, along with my L.H. drill bits I ordered. If anybody has a need for a 14x1.5 tap in the future, let me know. I'll probably just stop by Mark Mitsu tomorrow and pick up a new crank bolt, it's just actually cheaper than driving the 120 mile round trip to Pa_Jero's house. I'm going to reuse the B-ville washer; it looks good and has a nice shape to it. I'll need a new drift pin, but those look to be fairly easy to get. Everything behind the H.B. looks fine. Nothing touched the timing gear or crank sensor.

It continues.

Do you have a link for this?

Look for a suggestion thing on Facebook. I sent the same thing to him. Maybe you two can work it out.

Hahahaha...

I've been reading this with interest. What a pain in the rear. I don't understand the difference in bolts completely because I haven't seen the setup, but regardless, pulling a broken bolt out of the crank sounds like an incredibly unfun job that would tick me off pretty good.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the support.

It does tick me off, but I have to do it. It's getting everything tool-wise lined up that takes me so long. And it is physically taxing, as I'm tall, but the truck is lifted and I'm reaching in over the top to get a good look at where I'm drilling.

I try to make it a little fun, though.

My fan has had similar cracks in it for close to 100K miles now and hasn't shown any signs of getting worse or coming apart. IIRC, it looked like the blades would still be retained by the attaching bolts even if they were to break completely at the cracking locations, so I've not been too worried about it.

Your results may vary. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Good to know, Ryan. I should add that my radiator was never lowered after I added the body lift and the fan would contact the bottom of the shroud on occasion during off roading.

Picked up the radiator this afternoon ($90). The shop owner John said "they don't make 'em like this anymore." Ha ha. Well put.

All parts are here. Still waiting on UPS to drop my drill bits, which their tracking system says "out for delivery." Those guys get to work late this time of year.

Need a Spot
I'm a newby member but I have been following the whoas of several montero owners and I thought I would finally join into the fray.

I had a crank bolt break on me a few years ago ('95 SR)and didn't have the funds to take it to a mechanic (I probably wouldn't have anyway, I always love a challenge, I think I can do as good of a job or better, and I'm cheap).

But why I am commenting is because I wanted to share how I proved a dealer wrong by NOT damaging the threads in my crank and saving a ton of time.

How I removed the broken bolt was by using reverse drill bits and a home built drill fixture. The fixure was simply a two inch PVC coupling I got from the hardware store with a two inch pulley pressed into one end and a series (2) nested brass bearings that fit snuggly into the hole of the pulley. The bearings were sized to fit the left hand turn drill bits thus guiding the bits straights in to the bolt. The PVC coupling fits around the crank timing sprocket but the roll pin had to be removed for the pulley to seat on top of the sprocket. I believe now that I could of used an oak or plastic insert with two hole drilled into it, one for the bearings and one for the roll pin. This may also allow for sizing for the guide bearing/sleaves.

Using this fixture and an angle drill I was able to have the bolt out in less than an hour. Before I thought of the fixture I was so worried about drilling crooked I spent about two hours getting no where.

I hope this helps and I thank all of you for your past posts, they have helped me tremendously.

If you need more info just ask. I may even have the old fixture around for pix if needed.

Hey Thos95, where are you in central IL? I'm from...Peoria, as if you couldn't tell.

I've drilled all the way through my bolt, and pretty much in the middle of the thing. In the course of drilling, stopping and taking pictures, I noticed that the bolt has rotated about a half-turn out. Not sure if it's getting stuck on the dirty threads or what, but my drill decided to unscrew its chuck repeatedly as it got dark, so I was done for the evening anyway.

I'm getting...somewhere.
