Glad to hear Karl saved the day! Of course, if it's Johnny's crooked drilling that lead to the holdup, then perhaps I should be the one to install the Time-Sert (I know, I mistakenly called it a Thread-Sert in a previous post). It worked like a charm for me, but then I made sure it was COMPLETELY straight before any cutting at all!

Dylan, Johnny is going to try using what is left of the threads, he has a couple of option. If that fails than your time-serts will be the last resort. Once you drill for the time-serts there is no going back.

I want to be able to reach the threads left undamaged deeper in the crank bore. I could try to get a bolt about 20mm (5/8") longer. I could try having a machine shop bore a recess into the stock washer so the stock bolt sits a bit closer to the harmonic balancer, but that doesn't get me 20mm.

I reckon that the stock bolt probably isn't harder than grade 8, as any harder might risk breaking the crank snout instead of snapping itself. It would be pretty straightforward to find a longer bolt in grade 8, but the head design wouldn't be the same.

Decisions.

if you find another bolt that isn't the mitsu style design you could always just make sure to buy a new one with every timing belt change, to cover your butt from another breakage.

This has gotten even more ridiculous. I'd pretty much forgotten about the drift pin that locates the clocking of the harmonic balancer on the crank until this evening. Well, it's sheared off flush with the crank snout. And it's made of some kind of super hard steel that my unused left handed drill bits barely touch. I can't believe this...

I located a grade 8 bolt at Ace hardware that's exactly 20mm longer than the stock one. It may be too long, however. I threaded it in the crank all the way and tightened it a little with a socket, but I think there's just a bit too much bolt sticking out for it the be able to clamp the H.B. tightly. I'll go back again tomorrow to see if they have a slightly shorter one.

You need some specification on bolt hardness, will a grade 8 bolt even hold 120ft-lb or what ever the proper torque is. And to get as many threads as possible but still clamp. Some careful measuring and bolt customizing are in order.

I have a timing belt sprocket just sitting here with all three pins nice and straight and whole. $1000 limited time only.

Times up.

Fastenal specs

Look at page A-8, Grade 8.8 metric 14 mm bolt only good to 103 ft-lbs. I would get a 10.9 bolt. The finer threads of the crank, than what is listed, might make a 8.8 just barely strong enough.

From what fasteddy says, you are going to want to use the stock washer, it has special springiness properties.

The pin is part of the sprocket not the crank. Replace the sprocket. Check condition of key and replace if necessary.

Are there enough threads left to hold the bolt with stripping out?
