Dizzy OR ECM ignition problem??? #1054236 11/21/12 02:27 AM

Hi guys, (need some experienced tech stuff)

First Problem: Engine cutting out while driving. Idles just fine.

Solution: Sent ECU for rebuild

Second Problem: Starter not engaging.

Solution: Installed new solenoid, then installed new battery

Third Problem: No spark from Coil

Solution: Installed new Dizzy

Everything works againà Taking Monty for a spinà.. Twenty minutes laterà.

Forth Problem: Engine cutting out again, but got it home before complete failureà

Solution: BURN IT???

Question:
1) Could it be my vacuum advance on my distributor?

2)Could it be a bad Dizzy ($63.00 down the drain)?

3)Could it be a bad ECU rebuild? I called AV-PRO ECM-UCM and talked to Nick. He said it could be a bad rebuild but couldnÆt say until receiving it. AV-PRO ECM-UCM wasnÆt the place I originally sent it toà. The place I sent it was Automotive Electronic Solutions in Floridaà. There goes $320 down the drainà.

Note: Plugs are new. Timing is dead on. Carb is dialed in and running great. Gas is new too.

I really feel like a <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />

Have you had this problem?

what is the cutting out like?? Just a misfire or just dies?

was the distributor used?

does it always happen at the same time?

i got tons of good parts if needed

What kind of set up are u running? ItÆs a 2.6 with the stock carb and ecu?

ANSWER: 2.6 with Weber 38/38, stock ECU.

What is the cutting out like?? Just a misfire or just dies?

ANSWER: Just cutting out like not getting enough gas or spontaneously cutting out (jerking) but would continue to run after I let-off the accelerator.

Was the distributor used?

ANSWER: Distributor is new (has less than 4K miles on it)

Does it always happen at the same time?

ANSWER: Around 30 MPH as I was accelerating, but heading home before I had to toe it home.

You spent many $$ on expensive things, how about the little ones? Coil, wiring, plugged cat??

Hey, Jon, how ya been?

Are you running the stock fuel pump with a pressure reducer?

Harbor Freight sells a Mi-T-Vac system for cheap that you can apply vacuum and pressure to systems (and bleed the heck out of brakes). It's marked as a Harbor Freight/off brand, but it's the real deal in the box, instructions and all. I'm glad I bought mine. You can check vac advance and other dashpots, etc.

Have you checked the distributor to verify centrifugal advance? Recheck wiring around the dizzy and look at the running engine in the dark to easily see any arcing.

Check for vacuum leaks with an unlit propane torch. Increased rpm's means you have a leak right where the end of the torch is.

Just some basic stuff I could remember, maybe too basic, but what the hey.

i am a little confused stock ecu and weber 38?

the weber does not require a ecu it only has one wire for the choke assembly.

mmm, yes, with a weber the ecu is just dead weight. The spark is controlled by the ignitor in the dizzy and the mechanical and vac advance, so the ecu money was wasted from go.

It sounds like fuel to me given that it happens at rising rpms and sputters, then dies, but will recrank.

Hey JohnnyB... I've been great except with trying to troubleshoot this dang thing. Something else keeps popping up making me feel like what I just repaired didn't work...

Thanks for all suggestions and I'll let you know how everything turns out after this weekend (4 day holiday)....

Your correct. The ECU problem isn't with the Weber, it's with the ignition (spark) it self. I used the "fuel missing" analogy to help describe the symptom it was having.

Nick said that the ECU problem would show up with either the fuel injectors (which I don't have) or the ignition system.

I have a new key ignition installed, new Coil, new Dizzy, new fuel pump.

The current symptom (jerking while accelerating)was temporally fixed after installing the new Dizzy and rebuilt ECU, but it only lasted for 20 minutes and then started again.

Sorry for all my confusion....

Plugs only have 4K miles on them. Coil was just installed before installing new Dizzy. Plug wires only have 4K miles too.
