You hunt hogs off a mule, not a horse. A horse will try to run from the hog, and get all slashed up, the mule will stomp the hogs into scrapple. Horses are too stupid. I've always been fond of mule's smarts.

We used to hunt hogs on foot on 7 Mile Island at Muscle Shoals in the TN river, with everything from a 30 cal carbine to a 10ga coach gun. These were feral domestics that had been allowed to run wild on the island, and they could run 300lbs for a good boar. I've seen a big boar keep coming after being hit ded center in the chest with a 44mag out of a Ruger 44 autoloader rifle, and only dropped with a second round in the head. The chest gristle stopped the .44mag and the vitals were not penetrated on the chest shot. The 30 carbine would only kill in head or side shots. I used a model 12 Winchester pump with slugs and #1 buck alternating, slug up first.

If you hunted from vehicles in AL, you got busted for jacklighting, no matter what the season. In fact, if you had a loaded gun in the car at night you ran the risk of a jacklighting bust.
