Looks like this truck is a goner. - unless I can source a replacement for the tranny. Son was driving it (210K) and bam - now only fourth gear works. (The same exact failure I had on my SWB a few years ago.)

I wonder if Jim_B is still on this forum. He probably has a spare.

FYI, I'm in Boston, but anything will be considered.

That might even be an easy rebuild. Sounds like a counter shaft problem, maybe. And this may be the only iron 5psd I've seen die....

Likely the counter shaft bearing let go. Prob just pull it apart, and replace that one bearing. Thats all I had to do for mine.

Landraider: Is there a link on this board about that rebuild so I can begin to educate my miserable self?

No. I did not do a write up, but I did take a few pics. It's really straight foward honestly.

#1 Pull the V5MT1 out
#2 take off the transfer case
#3 take off the bellhousing
#4 Take off the top plate, and have a look See.
#5 take it apart until you can replace all the crapped out bearings inside.

I'll try and dig up some pics.

I did mine on dirt with plywood underneath. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />

Pull it on apart, and show us the damage you've got. I honestly think if I'd have kept running mine with that bearing trashed, it would have had symptoms just like yours.

Good writeup. My son is driving it back (in 4th gear only, builds character!) from western MA tomorrow, so I'll be able to look at it then. I presume I have a V5MT1-1 (truck is a '91) but from what I can see, the -3 is a better unit..

Sorry to hear about the tranny. I've checked car-part.com and numerous listings come up on the east coast.
