Off_roader, does that '92 tranny fit in my rig? It says it's off a pickup, plus it is newer..

The search I did was for a 91 Montero . their search engine used to ask if you wanted the results to include compatible options included. It's time it didn't ask so im assuming it wou ld be compatible to a degree. Others like RXINHED might know better.

The V6 Montero & Mighty Max/Dodge Raider & D50 manual transmissions should be interchangeable. Appropriate years should be for the late 1988 to 1995 model years, all were hydraulic.
I gave away a working V6 trans about 3 years ago, but that doesn't help you.

Update: truck no longer moves in any gear. Son stuck in the middle of MA. Heh. Still waiting for someone to explain why this is *my* problem...
I'll probably drive out there, have it flatbedded someplace where it can sit, and see about buying one of the swapper trannies off car-part.com
Stand by as this epic continues.

Yes, sure we do. But that leaves him stranded, so I'm on my way. Not a big deal, really - its only 80 mi from here.

I wonder if Jim_B is still on this forum. He probably has a spare. I'm not around here much anymore. At least the broken-down truck is a little closer to home this time. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I took apart the failed transmission of the truck you very generously gave to me, and posted up some pictures here at one point. I'm sure the photos were deleted from Photobucket a long time ago. If the rest of the truck is in good shape and your son wants to repair it, I'd recommend getting the old transmission rebuilt. (Unless driving the vehicle after the gearbox failed has caused too much damage.) The junkyard transmission I put in the gold Montero worked, but it used to pop out of gear on a pretty regular basis (2nd and/or 3rd gears, IIRC). Buying a 20+ year old used transmission is definitely a bit of a crapshoot.

Here's the old thread from 2004: V5MT1 Failure I guess it was the front countershaft bearing (pics are long gone).

Wow, interesting writeup. I'm back from parking the currently-disabled Montero off the street. Now I have some time to think about how best to get this thing back on the road.
