I plan to try to rebuild the old one once I get the truck back on the road. I suspect the gears themselves may be ground a bit though.

Looks like the local high school voc-tech program will do a tranny swap for me (useful, since I have no lift!)

About to go get the MightyMax transmission/TC. Wish me luck.

OK, I have the replacement V5MT1 in hand. It has a 412-55450 transfer case attached. The spec book the boneyard guy was using says the 1991 Montero needs a 412-55397 transfer case, and that the two are not interchangeable.

What are the differences between these two stock numbers? Anyone know?

Do they look the same externally? Why not just use the one that's original to the truck? It's got a lot of miles, but you know it's made for the vehicle.

You don't *need* a lift. I did mine without one. I used a crappy old scissor jack, and muscle power. Having spent 2 years in high school Votech auto mechanics, I'd stay far far away from them.

If the transfer cases are the same, use them. difference may be drive shaft flanges, length, speedo hookup, wiring / reverse/4wd indicator hookups, or mounting differences. I wish I was local. We could R&R in a long workday easy.

Just a generic question about interchangeability: I have the old V5MT1 and transfercase from my parted out '89 SWB. Should I keep this around incase my 1992 Gen 2 V5MT1 & TC dies someday? or doesn't this fit my Gen 2? I looked at Car-Part and they don't list them crossing, but might be some minor thing like the CAD or something. Not sure.

As long as it's opened up, I ought to do the clutch. Is this the right part?
