Mine is a 2001. It's just like this pic. All under the back in front of the bumper. http://www.kia-forums.com/attachments/1g...-kiafuelpic.jpg

Mine is completely different than the ones that the auto parts places including Kiapartsoutlet says. They say mine is the under hood style....

This is NOT like mine.
http://www.kiapartsoutlet.com/index.php?...amp;catid=30153

Even the FSM on the KIA site is different than mine including the whole fuel tank setup. Has been making it hard to work on mine as other than the principles being the same. No one has the parts diagrams and such that match mine...

Until I found that link with the pic that IS like mine I was kinda under going "Well this SHOULD be this part....."

and an update. I got gas twice yesterday during some snow wheeling.
Keepin It Awesome took the gas like a boss. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
So it's fixed for now.

Yeah. I figure it'll get all mucked up again. Especially being winter in the Pacific Northwest.....

I'm looking into some way to relocate at least the filter to a more sheltered location. Maybe to the inside of the frame rail in front of the axle or something.

Until then I'll check it every so often. It's only 6 10mm bolts to drop the box and remove the strap holding all the EVAP stuff in the box. Then I can clean it out.

Interesting. My 2002 Sportage 2 door has the charcoal canister under the hood. I wonder if it's a geographic thing.

Maybe. I know mine was bought not too far from me new and has always stayed in Oregon.
But maybe it's a CA model....
I'd have to look at the tag under the hood.

I know I read somewhere not KIA related about the general function of the EVAP system and it stated that the closer the canister and such are to the gas tank itself, the more efficient the system works.
CA being a super strict emissions state could be the reason mine is hung under the rear, maybe it was destined to go there but ended up at an OR dealer.

Mine is a 2001 2-door, and has the canister under the hood, too.

01 Convertible; Electric Fan; 3" Up Your Kia lift spacers; Tj 104's; 31x10.5x15's on Centerlines; Rear LSD.
GONE, all I have left are a few spare parts and the wheels.

Man I wish mine was under the hood. Almost seems like the under the rear ones are the rare ones.
Makes for a tighter engine compartment, but sure would be more protected.
They put mine under the compartment in the back that the jack and such is in.

It could be a 2-door thing too since they are shorter than a 4-door. We have a smaller fuel tank than a 4-door.

If you aren't required to have your vehicle emissions tested, or if there's no visual inspection to verify everything complies with the state's regs (like they do in California <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />), then you might be able to swap out the canister system you have with one of the under-the-hood design. I'm not sure how difficult it would be - there might be a sensor or two tied to it. But a poke around a bone-yard Sporty might give you an idea of what's required, if it seems worth the trouble...
