Need a Spot
Hello all,

I am talking to a seller of a 95 SR with 192k miles on it. The truck has service records up to 2010/170k miles. It looks like the timing belt was changed at 165k, and was supposedly owned by a Mitsubishi technician at a local dealership from 2000-2010. It has regular service records from that time showing dealer service.

Assuming it is in good condition now, should I be worried about a truck with that many miles on it? I will be using it as a off-road/trail riding/expo rig, not a daily driver. Can I expect to get another 50k miles out of it if I stay on top of maintenance? How do these trucks do at 200k+ when well maintained?

Thanks

I'm going to say go for it. Its about maintenance more than anything. See my sig.

Body Damage is Cool
I've got over 230K on my 95 SR, and the majority of the drivetrain components are still original. I pulled the cylinder heads at 130K to replace the valve stem seals but the bottom end of the engine has never been touched. The transmission has had nothing done to it but fluid changes. I've switched to 4.90 gears in the axles but they were both still working fine with no noises prior to that. overall, the significant components tend to be pretty stout if they are maintained - the maintenance that yours has had sounds like a major bonus, especially if it was by a tech at a Mitsu dealership. Having been a service advisor at a Nissan dealership, my experience has been that dealership techs will usually use factory parts, are very familiar with the common problem areas on the vehicle, and tend to do the repairs correctly (of course, that may vary by the individual technician, but if he worked there for 10 years he probably wasn't a hack). This means that issues like the lower intake plenum will have been taken care of, and maintenance will have been done with correct fluids and parts.

The types of issues my Montero tends to have are typical for vehicles with higher mileage - window regulators, wheel bearings, rubber mounts and bushings. Living in dry AZ is hard on rubber parts, and wheeling it fairly hard on 35" tires has no doubt accelerated the wear on the suspension and steering components, but I generally keep it pretty well maintained and it doesn't leak anything in my driveway.

I'm with Ryan on this one. I'd go for it.

Make sure your crank bolt is the revised third version; ask me how I learned that.

How did you learn that?

And also, how will I be able to tell?

Thanks

I see it now, thanks. How common is this problem?

Common enough that Mitsu introduced 3 different version to try and stem the problem. I see it as a must change item now.

Common enough that when I went to the dealer parts counter and told him I needed a new crank bolt, he said 'Oh yeah, the ones that break all the time.'

The problem isn't limited to the 3.5 in your SR, it's an issue with the 3.0 also. Other manufacturers have similar crankshaft issues also, so it's not even limited to Mitsubishi products.
