Just purchased a 1988 diesel military suburban, glow plugs don't always want to come on when I turn the key on.Where should I start. METALMOVER

First, make sure you are receiving the correct voltage at the glow plug and work back towards the ignition system if you are not.

In addition to glow plug, there could be a pre-lub pump that is in the circuit.

But, intermittent operation and the fact that it is former military vehicle, I would pay close attention to the ignition switch, wiring and connector plugs.

The glow plug controller gave my 1-ton Chevy problems. My favorite way to deal with that was to remove the GP controller and install a set of the auto-temp sensing Delco glow plugs and a switch. There are several write ups online that discuss the procedure.
