not sure if you've seen this video or not.

it is for a montero sport, but still for the 3.5L SOHC (you'll want to mute the video)

I got the intake and radiator out which is what I wanted to get accomplished and ready to keep going tomorrow. Removing the radiator took a little longer than I thought. here are some not so exciting shots.

looks good!

one recommendation would be to the transmission cooler lines, and cap them off with the fingers from some rubber gloves.. You can use a zip tie to help hold the rubber finger into place. I noticed that the lines continued to drip. Plus it keeps other stuff from falling in there.

while you have everything apart, can you help me on another post? Where are these things bolted down? I'd like to get them back to their original location.

Here is my progress from yesterday. The AC compressor and bracket was a royal pita. Notice the TB cover is looking pretty bad and there is a cable that runs over the right side valve cover that looks like some heat got to it. I question if that cable was in the correct place as it seem as if it could have been ran around the outside of the intake manifold. I hope to get the new water pump on today at least.

The last bolt was the pita and after an hour I had to go buy a 14mm 1/2 socket and 2inch extension and it came right off.

Sorry I did not get any shots of removing the crank bolt as my camera battery died. The tool rested right on the frame and copper extension work great.

Here is the cable I'm concerned about

TB cover has a broken piece missing and the outside seal looks shot. not a good photo.

Added: Sunday Morning progress. Even with the cam tool I'm have trouble removing the cam bolt. Looks like the left side cam seal is leaking. I thought the water pump was making noise but turns out the tensioner pulley bearing was a little wobbly.

The Gates kit came with a paper gasket. The one I removed is a metal gasket. Should I be concerned about using the paper gasket and would you recommend using permatex?

my WP also had a paper gasket. I just used it without anything else.... perhaps a noob mistake... I don't have many miles on the pump to be able to advise one way or the other.

I think that cable you're worried about might be the positive lead for the battery, follow it to the front of the engine bay to confirm... not sure what you would do to fix it, but some electrical tape, or maybe some other kind of wrapped foam insulation would help.

AC pump is a huge pain....

my timing belt cover also has a piece missing... it isn't quite as big as your gap, but I put some tape over it for the time being... I doubt the tape will last too long, but it will work until I come up with a better solution. The better solution might be just to order a new timing belt cover)

I will also add that once you remove all the bolts for the water pump, there isn't really anything holding the water pump housing to the engine block. So you want to be careful that you don't bump the housing, or else you might end up breaking the seal between the housing and the block.

unless you have a new seal to use, then probably best to replace the old one, so bump away

The kit came with the o-ring housing gasket. I should do them also. I'm running into a issue with removing the old valve cover gasket. They are hard and brittle. having a tough time getting the old ones out.
