Need a Spot
Hi All,

I just picked up a nice set of 31x10.5x15 BFG ATs mounted on some 15x8 steelies. Since my wife prefers the stock wheels to the black steel wheels, are there any issues with running 10.5s on a 6" pomegranate wheel?

Looking through the archives, there seems to be mixed feelings but people still run them.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

There are two camps: Those who have done it, say its fine, and those who follow what the manufacturer says which is generally 7.5-8" rim width minimum. Those who've done it on 6" rims have reported a loss in lateral stability in turns.

Personally,I would not do it.

In the photo above, Brian' Montero (handle is 'bs') is depicted wearing Swamper 34x10.5s on pomegranate rims. Judging by the wear pattern of the tires, looks like they pretty evenly wear.

I agree with GeoCrasher about the two camps. I've used 32x11.5 all terrains on stock steel rims and didn't like the way my Raider felt when cornering, less negative effect with the 31x10.5s. For what it's worth, I thought my Raider handled best with 33x12.5s with 8" front and 10" rear rims. I have no pics with 33x10.5 tires.

I never had any trouble, and I corner a lot harder than most. I always pumped them up to about 42-45psi, though.

I don't know what you're driving, bot on my '88 SWB with a 2"BL and 32's. I had a problem with the bulge of the tire hitting the rear bump stop.

I tucked the tire and did this;

Got some auto part store wheel spacers for $10 and trimmed that piece off and not had any problems

Love the performance and look of them though!

Here is a link to another tire question thread that I posted a few pics in...especially the 32x11.5 rubbing the inner fenderwell when mounted on stock rims. With a 10.5 wide tire, presumably you'd have an extra half inch to work with and alleviate any problems there.

This is odd. Everything I've ever read here suggest 31x10.5R15's work jsut fine on the stock alloy(aka "LS") rims.I've run a variety of 31x10.5's on several of my Montero's with never a problem, both nearly always they have been used with already several 32'nds of wear. For sure BF Goodrich All Terrains and Toyo Open Country's seem to have no issue. I also though severla have run various mud terrains this size with no issue on a stock set-up (stock rims, stock height, etc).

I did however purchase my first brand new set of 31x10.5's for my 89 LS a few months back, but still havent gotten them on the road yet as I'm still screwing around with rear axle upgrades. They are the new(er) Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs with the side knobbies on them. I'll monitor the situaiton carefully and report back in the future. I'm hoping with what I paid there isnt an issue.

Jim

The OP inquired originally about 31x10.5, yes. Us others have diverged...thanks for bringing it back. I don't have any negative experience with 31x10.5 tires on stock rims.

Not sure if you have a Gen 1 or Gen 2. I have a Gen 2 with 15 x 6" (the original stock white RS wagon wheels) and 31 x 10.5" seams to be no problems.

I'vet been running 33x12.5 on the stock rims of my GEN II for about 1.5 years.

During that time they've seen a lot of off-road action and I've not had a problem them.
