I haven't had time to look, but can I see both the timing and balance shaft chains in that small inspection hole? The one in the timing cover. I've recently acquired an 84 that has a few mods and want to check for BSE kit. And yes Russel it's got the low profile split rear bumper.

If it's got a bse kit, it still has a chain under that cover, a short one to drive the oil pump. You might be able to feel the tension side of the chain, above and parallel to the slack side that's under the inspection plate.

You might also pull the bs bore cover on the dside and see that balance shaft. but sometimes the lazy leave the dside shaft in so they don't have to drive in the blank bearing to block off the oil passage on that side. You might get enough sight line by looking down the timing chain hole in the head, especially if you use a borescope. That way all you have to do is pull the valve cover.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi all, I was doing my bi-annual forum lurking when I stumbled on this...

You mentioned the lazy will leave the driver side balance shaft in to avoid putting in a plug. Um, what if your engine does not have a balancing shaft or a plug, is that bad? My engine was in pieces when I got it, and already had a balance shaft delete kit.

Mine has about 3000 miles on it without either. I assume I should do something about this?

Thank you,
Ryan

looks good Russell. I do not regret putting boat anchors on mine though.

Stupid iphone correction took out the second L. I wish these splitty bumpers would bolt right on my 91.

It's just a few mounts to fab up with a metal brake and drill press, cast some new bumper ends.

Should I use the box and pan brake, the 4ft, or 8 ft brake? I only have three drill presses to choose from and a few lathes. Four weld techs on site certified to weld anything on aircraft. The only thing I'd have a problem with is the end caps and the free time to do any of this.
