 3.5L SOHC - Valve Stem Seal - Install pressure?

I'm installing valve stem seals. I'm having a devil of time getting the old ones off, and when I slide the new ones on, I'm not really sure how much pressure is needed to properly seat the seal.
I'm using a deep 10mm socket, and putting some pretty strong pressure on it with my thumb and body, but I'm feeling any kind of reassuring "snap" or "pop" to indicate they have been driven home.

Oh.... and the valve spring compressor I'm using slipped, causing the spring to rapidly decompress, and the 1/2 seated keeper to fire like a rocket past my magnet and into the side of the air box... good thing I have to order some lash adjusters, because now I might as well add a few keepers to the order...

Yeah this tool works nicely. I'm using the lisle copy of this tool on my miata. Without a decent sized compressor I'm having to use the 'rope in the cylinder' trick to keep the valves from falling in.

The tool looks nice, I did see a youtube video of it.... my concern is that the springs are so difficult to press down, I would have to be in the engine bay to get enough pressure compress the spring....
anyone have the official tool that I can borrow?
Also, I'm still not sure if I'm putting enough pressure on the new valve seal... I can't pull them back off with my fingers.. so they are on there a little..

I had the same problem on mine. There doesn't appear to be any indication from the seal that you might expect with a rubber lip seating. I also just used a deep socket with a couple of light taps and that seems to have been good enough. It's been a while since I did this and no problems from a seal slipping up the valve stem. I think you'll be fine.

I had the same problem on mine. There doesn't appear to be any indication from the seal that you might expect with a rubber lip seating. I also just used a deep socket with a couple of light taps and that seems to have been good enough. It's been a while since I did this and no problems from a seal slipping up the valve stem.
I think you'll be fine. Thanks for the reassurance! Now I just need to get the right spring compressor and find the keeper that fell into the top of the head (all oil returns are plugged, so it's up there somewhere. ....and buy more keepers and more HLAs

Hey, can anyone verify FOR SURE that the ga317 actually works on the SINGLE cam 3.5L engines? It looks like there's less room in there than the double cam 3.5s...

Hey, can anyone verify FOR SURE that the ga317 actually works on the SINGLE cam 3.5L engines? It looks like there's less room in there than the double cam 3.5s... I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. I did have a few valve keepers that were kind of stuck to the valve, and the spring retainer, so they didn't easily release. As long as you have the heads off the engine, that tool should work. If the heads are still on, I don't think you'll have enough room on the exhaust valves to get the proper leverage on the tool, or even fit the tool into place on the drivers side. I ended up renting a tool from a board member. It is a bar that bolts to the head, allowing you to use some lever action to compress the springs. I actually have a few keepers left over I can send you (you'll likely drop one, and they are quite small). I also replaced all of my hydraulic lash adjusters after I found a few bad ones. I probably didn't need to replace all of them, but I didn't want to have to do the job again anytime soon.

Another board member has offered to rent me the tool...I suppose I'll have to do that.
