I would also check trailing arm bushings. I had a very similar issue took, took it to several people including a mitsu dealership and they could not locate it. I changed out the bushings and noise gone. The bushings looked good but had gone soft. Everytime I stoped or hit the gas the trailing arm would hit the cup it sits in and make a thud!
