stuck valve lash adjusters. I fixed this by pumping them out with kero and then repriming them with oil. my buddies truck did that with rebuilt heads.

Sometimes a fresh oil and filter change and good drive can reprime the valve lash issue.

I gave it fresh oil and filter, then drove it about 2 miles after I let it idle for about 20 minutes, I was just concerned when the sound did not get any better. Guess I might look into the valve lash adjusters.

Take the adjuster out and immerse in diesel fuel/kerosene, and depress the plunger until all the air is out, then reinstall.

OR, in the truck, use a blunted needle and put it in the tiny hole in the top of the rocker and depress the ball in the adjuster, then press on the rocker to purge the air, a much easier process.

OK, I have come to the conclusion that the Valve Lash Adjusters are not my problem, I did some research and when I took off the valve cover and tried to move the rocker arrms, they were all good and tight, I read one sign of stuck valve lash adjusters is the rocker arms will move easily. So, I am back to square one, The noise, a very loud tack, tack, tack, that goes in time with the engine seems to be the loudest when a long pry bar is inserted where the thermostat is located and I put my ear to it, I swear it sound like it is directly in the top center of the engine, when I move to the right or the left it is not as loud. I have driven it a couple of miles like this and it runs great, it will run like a scalded dog, no problem. I let it idle for a while also, when it gets up to temp, it is not as bad as when first started, but is still sounds like a diesel. I was thinking it might be the water pump, but that is just a shot in the dark. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. One more thing, when I set my timing, I grounded the plug per the FSM, and set to 5* BTDC, then it says after it is set, take the ground off the plug and re-check, it should be 15* / 17* BTDC, mine jumps to like 22*/25* BTDC. I would not think this would have anything to do with the noise, but you never know. Thanks in advance for everyones help and suggestions.

It may be the water pump. My 95. Was making a noise that I thought for shure was a lifter or rod knock. It was my water pump the bearing was shot and impeller was toast. Good luck

Buy a mech stethoscope - they are cheap and will do a great job of locating the actual source of the sound...

What condition is the Harmonic Balancer?
A damaged / widened keyway will make timing marks off.
A damaged (enlarged diameter) center hole will be off balanced and it my work loose.
A loose H.B. can make a Tack, Tack, Tack sound that my be quieter when metal expands as engine heats up.
