Here's a link to the trans swap thread... I think this may give you an idea of what may be involved and why it might be a major pain to convert a 2wd to 4x4, as well as converting manual to auto, or vice-versa. As for the long block compatibility, I'd say take a look on one of the online KIA parts sellers (factory/OEM). You can cross-ref the long block for the model years listed to see if the part numbers are the same. You can also check eBay for compatibility on the motors being sold there. Those are a few avenues that may help clear things up. Hope that helps...
