I could be wrong but I don't think the process on a Mitsu has ever been photographically documented on 4x4wire... at least not that I can recall.

it's a standard box so it should be like any other chevy, ford, etc.

Pump is real easy ..Theres good info on here some place..

Its not 'standard' sort of thing... really.. They dont go bad most times.. You mean it leaks..? There not to bad if you can reman a "recirculating ball steering box"..Chevy Ford box's have the small roller bearings in cages so they stay put (most do)...But Mitsu boxes are not caged and use more WAY littler bearings to have to get in right ...And if the "spool valve" is bad it needs a tool made to open it...Chevy Ford box "spool valve" wiggles apart...

Just sealing a Mitsu box is not that bad ..If its just the input or output seals..

Body Damage is Cool
The pump is extremely simple to rebuild - it'll take longer to get it on & off the truck than to rebuild it.

There is a very detailed steering gearbox write-up on the Starquest website - I haven't compared the Starquest and Montero boxes side by side but I'm pretty sure that they're very similar in construction, so it would probably make a good starting point.

I've done it, but havent documented it.

You can run into problems acquiring seals and such depending upon what year Gen1 you have. I had only looked at 89-91 units since that's what I have. 89 is different from 90&91 (consequently, so is the pitman arm itself). The 89 unit has a smaller diameter shaft.

From what I can recall, seal kits are (or were) readily avaialble for the 90-91 units. 89 was a different matter. I had to get most of the seals piece by piece - and in bulk - from a local seal manufacturer after browsing catalogs and gettign the OE packing(seal) specs online.

After rebuilding my 89 unit, it's done a great job of remaining leak free the past 3 years and 15k miles (not a primary vehicle).

If you can get a full seal kit, go for it. If you have an 89 unit, you can either go through a seal distributor like I did , or give me a PM - I still think I have bags of extra seals for an 89.

88 and earlier either use a different gear or are the same as the smaller shaft 89 unit.
