Hello,
I recently got a 98 montero with the infinity audio system. The truck already has an aftermarket stereo installed and aftermarket speakers.

I noticed that the previous owner had bypassed the factory amp and just ran speaker wire straight from the speakers to the deck but the deck is wired into the factory plug.

I plugged the speaker into the factory speaker wire plug but got no audio. I heard there is a certain way to make an aftermarket radio work with the stock amp?

anyone know the details?

I think you need to have 2 sets of pre-amp outputs on the back of your aftermarket stereo (red and white RCA jacks). Not all stereos come with those, but if you have them you can get an adapter that lets you hook them into the factory amp wire. It's been awhile since I was in there so I don't remember all the details. Check crutchfield.com. Also I don't think the factory amp is all that great, so you might not be missing much with the current setup.

well with 6 speakers in the front and two in the back that have factory wiring it would be nice to have them working even of the factory amp is garbage.

I do have one of those adapters that has RCA in and speaker wire out.

I was just hoping it was a matter of maybe a power wire to the amp or something

You need two sets of pre-amp outputs. I just got two decks from Crutchfield and they come with two accessory connectors. One is for the RC hookups, and the other is to connect the head unit's power, antenna, remote amp on, etc. to the factory side under your dash. They also sell these for so cheap it isn't worth doing anything else, at <$15.

Yea there is already an aftermarket deck installed with pre-amp outs but the fatcory amp does not use regular RCA inputs. it has its own proprietary plug (DIN). I found that they do sell an adapter kit that has the DIN plug that splits off to RCAs and the remote turn on wire to turn the amp on when the stereo turns on... which I magically had the adapter already and didn't know it (accidentally bought it a while back and kept it) however some artard cut the DIN cable at the deck plug so now I have to find that cable...

Ah, I got you. That DIN/RCA adapter is common to a ton of the Mitsus and Dodges, at least, based on the Crutchfield fitment info. I'd bet any Mitsu+Infinity you could find at a JY would get you that wiring harness side.

With the right aftermarket harness it's plug and play. Just make sure the deck you put in you are able to adjust the levels of your pre amp outputs. you'll need to in order to get it sounding right. Put a double DIN pioneer in my 99 with the adapter harness worked well but took a while to get the settings right on the radio.
