If the oil burning is really bad there's a good chance that it'll destroy your catalytic converter or give you problems trying to pass emissions due to the elevated hydrocarbons. Lesser levels of oil burning won't do much other than carbon up your combustion chambers and exhaust, and probably contribute to clogging your EGR system.
