Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a non ABS open diffed 2001 Sportage.
It has developed a gear whine that is getting louder by the day. (changed the gear oil with good stuff a few times)
So I know it's on it's way out.

So the question is. KIA Parts Outlet has the whole carrier/gears/diff for an ABS model with an LSD.
If I'm going to put new parts in I'd like to go that route, as the price difference is not that much in the grand scheme of things over another open.
Can I use that and just not hook up the ABS sensor?
I assume I may have to plug a hole in the top of the carrier where the sensor goes if it does not have one in it.

I may also look at the dealer to see what the price difference is. Sure it costs more but no shipping to see if it evens out.

Going to also tear into it and see just whats going on. If the side bearings are worn and throwing the mesh out of whack but the gear teeth are still good I may just put new side bearings in it and call it good. But wanted to know ahead of time just in case.

(and yes lockers are also on my mind since I'll be in there, just didn't want to have to set the mesh as it's my first time.... I've rebuilt engines though so if I have to I have to, not afraid of getting tolerances right.)

Another question is....
How the heck do you get that diff out?!
Pulled the axle shafts and such. Removed all the bolts around the diff and then put a couple in only a few threads to catch it once it broke free. But I'm not being able to break that silicone bond...
Even tried a jack under it just behind the pinion flange.
All that did was pick up the whole thing off the jackstands.

Body Damage is Cool
If you have the axles out and have all the bolts out, it should come apart. You may have to tap a screw driver between the housings and pry them apart.
ABS or Non-abs won't matter on a non-abs car.
Hope this helps.

Cool.
Yeah I got the axles out and all the bolts out (put a couple in a few threads in case it lets go). I tried tapping on a small chisel to get it worked in between there.
No luck so far. Starting to run out of daylight so I called it a day.
I might sacrifice a cheap screwdriver and hit it with the grinder to give it more edge to get in there.

The next hurdle will be in looking at the KIA Tech site I'll need to get 220ft lbs on the nuts that hold the bearings on at the ends of the shafts (I'm going to replace them as I think they need it as well).

There a trick to that?

(Last solid axle I did was an old RX-7 and the bearings pressed on, had to take the shafts and bearings to a shop)

I know full of questions, but this is different than other stuff I've worked on and I wanna make sure I do it right. smile

So the diff is out (I took an old screwdriver and ground it thin on the end. A couple taps and it popped it apart.) and it's at a shop.
We have a local shop we are in good with and they have a diff guy.
Went that route as they are cutting me a deal due to the fact I already have the diff assembly out of the vehicle.
And I'll just know it's all new in there. All the gears looked really good. Caught it before things could start wearing oddly. smile

At some point it'll get a locker or LSD. But not right now, now I just need it back on the road.
There is camping to be done.

Yeah the bearings need it. One actually had a cracked outer race.
Got the seals and bearings. Realized that I also need to find the locknuts and washers that go with them (Dealer most likely). As the ones on there seem to be prone to being destroyed during removal....
I beat on it for awhile, but I think I'm just going to take them in to be swapped. (and yes i do know of the left side being reverse thread. )
