Anyone replace the backup switch in their Gen 2 manual transmission?

Next question, how do you change the backup light switch in a montero Gen 2 manual transmission?

I have power to the switch, but nothing after the switch.

Your help will be greatly appreciated and if you'll come do it, I'll provide the encouragement and maybe some refreshments. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the offer Ray, but I need to get the switch first and find out where it's located on the transmission.

I guess I'll be the first to replace one. Stay tuned.

my wires are cracked at the switch just like the 4 wd indicator switch do on the t case. Mine still works but do think for long.
The switch is located on the passenger side of the trans up high. It probably has a steel ball under the switch.
Rockauto has them on closeout.

Michael, logic with me here. This is a 5spd, right? When you shift to R, the lever is to the right and rear. This means the shift rail it moves it the one to the left on the dside. The shift rails run in the top of the tranny, one centerline, and one about an inch to each side of the center one. The R light switch must drop into a notch in the dside shift rail, so it must insert in line with that rail. The 5th/R shift rail is short, because R and 5 are in the tailshaft housing of the tranny, so the switch should be in that area. This should narrow it down to a small location. If all else fails, look in the 92-95 fsm, since the trannies are very close to identical. Happy hunting.
