Yes. It should be pretty easy and obvious if memory serves me correectly.

First order of business though (if you haven't done it yet) is to download the Factory Service Manual (FSM) from mitsubishilinks dot com. It will have directions and diagrams for most everything.

I have both an electronic and a printed copy. It's just easier for me that way.

And yes the AZ crew are reknowned for helping folks out. Just peruse the Lloyd build thread.

The top where the shifter plate bolts down will be best to just use RTV and also make sure the metal gear shift plate is there. Without it that breather on the top shifter plate does nothing but weep gear oil. If you need to remove it I would just replace your output shaft seals front and rear and also replace the input shaft seal that goes between the tranny and xcase. Those three seals order from the dealer. I won't ever use aftermarket seals to avoid headaches. Plus dealer seals are not much more expensive to use and you get the exact fit. But that's just my opinion, you do what you must.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
This is crazy and maybe looking far forward, but do we know if the Mitsubishi eclipse motor will fit the gen 1 montero. Of course I'm thinking the turbo one. This motor is smaller but certainly produced more power. I guess the only down fall is that the power is produced at the top of powerband. One thing to consider is perhaps using smaller turbo that spools up quicker? I dunno now I'm just thinking out of the box. As it seems the montero is terribly underpowered.

It's about the same amount of power as any other SUV from 1990.. it was never underpowered. Maybe compared to cars a quarter of a century newer... smile

But if you're going to swap something in, do the 4.7 from a Mitsu Raider smile

You can make almost any engine "fit", it's only a question of how much work you want to do to get it in there. Any engine swap is going to require wiring and plumbing at the very least, and most will require some amount of fabrication. One of the most common Gen I swaps is the 2.6 turbo from a Starion/Conquest, although I don't recall ever seeing a LWB being converted to turbo like that. The AZ Crew has installed a Mitsu 2.4 in a Gen II truggy, as well as installing a 3.5 V6 in a Gen I SWB - there are build threads for both projects on this forum.

If I'm not mistaken, the 1995 Montero SR was the quickest SUV produced in its model year. But that's memory "serving" me. It sure doesn't seem quick now. It might if it still had 31x10.5/15 tires on it with the stock alloy wheels instead of the boat anchors on it now. My tire/wheel combo is pushing 100 lbs/corner these days.

good call. I must consider its age. Also being my first real 4x4 i gotta get use to not having a zippy little car. hopefully the seals and such get in this week and i can get moving on the transfer case. My engine is currently fine so i'll wait till I have a reason to investigate it more.

The sterion sounds like a cool idea. SOUNDS LIKE and actually working out are often two very different things.

Also need to start trolling the local junkers for a 95+ rear end / brakes / trailing arms.

Maybe it's all relative but I got a hell of a lot of use and abuse out of a 120hp Trooper from that era, and the 2.6L Montero. Later owning a 200+hp Blazer and 270+hp Jeep I have a ton more power, the Blazer was properly quick but I have to admit that the Jeep I drive now drives sluggishly compared to the much, much lighter 1991 Trooper of days past. It feels powerful up hills and it can pull out in front of a lot of things at a stoplight without much skinny pedal but it doesn't actually feel quick.

More power is a good thing, I'm not trying to talk you out of that - but I do think there's a lot to be said for thinking lagom and making the best use of what you have before undertaking huge effort in making it more complicated.

Simple things first, I think your 12v engine was originally supposed to make about 140 horsepower and 170lbs torque... do you think it's actually producing those numbers? How's your fuel filter, have you replaced it? The injectors on the 6g72 don't have a ton of reserve bandwidth to begin with and anything that affects their pressure will have a huge impact on fuel delivery - subsequently horsepower AND MPG's (gasoline releases more energy per pound when rich, than when lean... so often a lean engine will get fewer MPG's than a rich one - while also delivering less power)

I haven't owned a 3.0 Montero, but I've been under a couple.. that exhaust system doesn't look sexy. I'd bet a smoother (not necessarily louder, just smoother/wider) exhaust would uncork enough extra pokemans to make you feel it every mile of your drive.

I wouldn't play with Dust-O-Matic open element intakes, not worth the damage if they don't improve filtration. There's probably some room for improvement in the bore of the throttle body (or maybe a swap over from a 3.3 or 3.8?) and the general porting/cleaning of the intake manifold.. I kinda go crazy cleaning any used car's engine when I get it.. inside/out.. amazing how many small problems magically reveal themselves that way and in aggregate how much the vehicle will wake up when they're resolved.
