I went ahead and ordered the factory gasket. This time I said F' it. I mean yeah, 32$ for the speedo gear oring and tranny pan gasket is kinda crazy but at least I can have a little confidence if this leaks that im the problem and not the 5$ gasket. Also the amount of time invested totally sucks.

Im not sure about the warped pan. dealing with previous owner bullshit sucks but just the way it goes I guess. was told the tranny was replaced or serviced or something 20k miles ago but without paperwork its hard to believe anything.

question? should I also use a sealer of sorts on the new gasket?

maybe like a thin layer of rtv. in the chance the pan is warped would it not help?

also since i don't have a torque wrench that sensitive i think i will go to finger tight and then one half turn.

Probably wouldn't hurt to schmear a thin line on there, on both sides of the gasket.

Check the pan with a straight edge of some type, too.

i never hurts to make the bolt holes flat you'll notice on the side of the pan that faces the transmission the holes will be kinda popped in /\ put the pan on a flat surface and tap it until it is flat again. A paint stick works pretty good for getting inbetween the pan and get good coverage over the bolt holes.

Ok, im new here but.. I never use atv or a sealer on auto transmissions. I only use atf sealent on oil and air seals and gaskets. Transmission fluid i believe eats hydraflora based sealers.. I could be wrong but with auto trannys, get it clean, straight flat edges, use the right torque and just use cork has always worked for me.

definitely the plan, to get this gasket on sooner or later. not leaking to bad right now and fluid level is fine. I have decided when I get my bonus from work Feb/march that I will sell this and get a 2.5 Gen. I'll appreciate its refinements Im sure of it. This truck is pretty raw. No doubt about it. But the family doesn't really like it. I think the 2.5 or maybe even the 3rd gen is coming up sooner than later. I must say though every time i drive this thing I like it more and more. Raw is good as far as Im concerned. I figure however the new models have the rear lock etc and better components from the factory.

I'll keep you guys posted. In the mean time I will probably still do a few things to this truck. the springs (i still need to pick up from Adam) and little things here and there. Certainly the trans pan gasket as well.

IMO, Your better off with a gen 2.5 or just a gen 2 SR. I love my gen 1 and probably wont ever get rid of it. But with having a family to cart around sometimes for camping and 4 wheeling, a 4 door works out a bit easier. And if I'm gonna own a 4dr, its not gonna be a gen 1.

I'm alive. Barely. Been working a bunch both photo and the lab, regardless. Still have the 91 monty. Runs great BUT same ol leak int the transgasket <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. Since my last post I've changed it twice. Once with the crappy NAPA gasket and once with the OEM 37$ mitsu gasket. Both leaked. Certainly feel good about my install but maybe I shouldn't since its leaked both times. Still leaks. My next plan is to try the RTV. Chrysler uses some stuff that is supposed to be pretty good. I just have never worked with RTV before so will have to research it properly or get some help from a mechanic friend. I figure it must be something with the way the pan fits. Perhaps the previous owner had over tighten them when they put it on. Who knows. I've gotten really fast at taking all of it apart.

I'll be honest I would like to keep the truck as its just pretty badass and the more I think about the Gen 2 I just don't know If I could commit to one when the the Gen 3 is not much more on the used market, I like the Gen 3 (not the sport) . . It would still be less expensive in my eyes to get a new trans for this than getting a newer one. And the newer ones don't give me the NATO / UN vibe this one does. I don't have to baby it where a new one I would be concerned. Still a lot I would like to do and it looks like I will be getting some time now in the for-see-able future to get on with it. So anyhow , Hello again and when is the next meet. COunt me in. Leaking or not.

If the pan is leaking, take it back off. Put it on a known flat surface. Turn it upside down and lightly tap the bolt holes so they are flush. Recheck flatness. Use RTV sparingly and don't get ANY in the pan. Stuff works, but use it in moderation and in combination with the gasket, both above and below it. Do not overtighten the pan bolts; pay attention to the factory specs and if you don't know them, ask us and we'll look it up.
