Maybe a contact for someone that can custom manufacture the CAT for you if you need one.

Not sure that's a possibility. IIRC, in California you're only allowed to used certain catalytic converters that are already approved by the state. Unless the custom CAT shop has sent one in to be approved, then it won't be an option for us.

...but I don't believe it is necessary to do anything more than a "sniff" test and general vehicle inspection.

If the tailpipe emissions are within spec, does it really matter if the car has headers/CAI/cam etc..?

I'm with you on that. I think CA is trying to crack down on shops that 'help' you pass vehicles that normally wouldn't pass a smog check. I'm OK with that. What I'm not OK with is making EVERY vehicle owner go through the Star inspection station and charging extra for it especially when 99% or more have never attempted to skirt the process.

So can anyone confirm that this is for ALL pre 2000 vehicles regardless of past test results or just those that barely passed? If I paid extra in the past to ensure my rig is properly maintained and it passed with flying colors, there's no reason I should have to go to a Star Smog Station.

Thanks for the link, but I shouldn't need a custom one. Texas isn't as strict on the parts themselves. As long as I have one, and it functions well enough to pass the emissions test, There shouldn't be any problems.

That's one good thing about the testing here. As long as any emission systems that were factory installed on the vehicle are intact and functioning properly, They pass.

Well it's time for the SR to go. While I agree with some here, others I don't but in the end, if no one buys it, it's a great 4x4 that's going to get crushed and not even a chance to become a parts car.

If I didn't have RedCar already, it would be my main 4x4 as the extra room and factory locker is nice.

But again, just sad to see this fate to ALOT of cars now. Kinda like the "Cash for Clunkers" deal..

Bad economics.. BUT HEY!! it's Komifornia

1995 SR (Lucky)-SOLD..Kinda sad

The price you pay for living in a state with little public transit, high population, and an environment that supports pollution with probably an underground system for passing smoggy vehicles...

...this.

But I'm not sure why everyone is panicing. From what I can tell, a lot of the import racer crowd just doesn't understand what STAR is.

As for me, my '95 SR passed just fine a month or two ago. As long as you have the emissions crap on the car, and it's working, then you have nothing to worry about.

If you still think you have something to worry about, there are other ways to get your car smogged.

This.^^^

Virtually none of the emissions components on a modern vehicle are detrimental to its performance because the vehicles are designed to work with them from the start, so there's very little improvement to be gained by removing or disabling them. If one of the components has a problem then it should be repaired, just like maintaining anything else on the vehicle. The emissions laws don't require vehicles to pass anything more stringent than what they were designed to pass originally, so if a vehicle doesn't pass then it just needs maintenance or repairs to bring it back to it's original working order. Maintenance and repairs are just part of the responsibility of owning a vehicle.

The problem is that the cost is passed directly onto the consumer... YOU. YOU have to pay to have crap that offends you installed on your vehicle.

Glad I am in a state with visual inspection ONLY. all my stuff is there but my cat is leaking cracked manifold and the rest of the exhaust is held on by force of habit. Wish I had the $ to ship that SR here... I would love a rust free cali truck.

Can probably move your residence to a smog free county.
