If we're doing The Abyss, I'll head out Friday probably morning to secure the campsite.

If we're doing Klondyke, remember that there are 2 routes - both about as long as each other but the harder-core route is an all day affair so you should be in Mammoth before 9am if you want to have any fun at camp that night. The easy route is.. easier.. but of course a bit longer. There will be plenty of available campsites.

Toasty; since you have fancy admin magic powers can you hacksaw all the earlier posts down so we're just talking about Abyss vs. Klondyke?

It's a fine camping area, it's above most of the snakes and there's shade at the campsite.

So, I guess your vote (if you didn't previously vote for it) makes the most recent poll 3:2 in favor of the abyss... Official it is.

Things to know about this camping endeavor:
  • The primary campsite has room for maybe 5 trucks, or we can park a little bit away from the actual campsite
  • It's at a (sorta) popular hiking trailhead so we're guaranteed a little bit of company during the day if we camp right there. There's another somewhat more secluded campsite another mile away or so but it's less awesome. We may be forced there if the primary site is occupied.
  • The ground is a bit rocky, it's possible to find flat earth but bring camp pads or a cot or sleep in your vehicle. If you just have a bag and sleep on the ground, there's enough organic/fine matter around you can probably make out OK.
  • There's a creek and it's not hella polluted but I wouldn't call it drinking water, and it's like a 2 foot wide, 2 inch deep sort of creek most of the time if it's running.
  • There aren't any particularly glorious locations for shootin' stuff, so if you're going to shoot stuff you'll want to travel a little bit away from camp.
  • I don't particularly like olives on pizza.
  • The hike is pretty brutal for people who don't regularly hike. It's 100% uphill from camp. There's a section of actual rope climbing that poses serious risk of injury and it does not have a bypass. I'm not saying this hike is hardcore like the Pacific Crest Trail or anything, but plan for a workout and if you don't have health insurance it might not be worth the risk.
  • Like anything cool in AZ, it's a pretty long drive from central Phoenix - I guess you guys on the East side cut a significant portion of it out but you still have to go to globe, then up to the lake, then up the hill from there... all before you even get to the dirt road which then is even more driving before you get to the part that even justifies a 4wd... and it doesn't "justify" 35" tires.

Anyway that's it for now, let's get our stuff organized mofooz! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

Since the location we've selected is not gated and not a developed campground, it shouldn't be affected by the gov't shutdown (if that's still ongoing in a couple weeks).

There is a possibility that we'll see increased traffic from people who would have otherwise been camping somewhere that IS affected... no way to predict that.

Stacey and I are still planning to head up Friday morning. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Did we ever get a who's in on this? We're still in but now we'll likely definitely have Anthony so i don't want to take him on the hike. I'm good for the rest of it though, or hiking with the little guy and stopping when it gets dangerous for him.

Looking forward to it though.

No idea.

So let's do that:

  • Myself & Stacey - Jeep WJ (1" tires) - heading up Friday AM - let me know if you want to convoy
  • Timbits - F150 (1.25" tires) departure time unknown
  • add yourself!
