You have to remove the compressor to remove and replace the seals, so you have to use the rope trick or the compressor trick (I prefer the former for the reasons stated above) to hold the valve with the spring and retainer and keepers removed to get at the seal, or it will drop into the cylinder. The air trick has the disadvantage of if you bump the valve stem, say while driving on the new seal, you kill the air seal on the cylinder, and down goes the valve, and the head has to come off. You don't heed 6' of rope - about 3'is enough, but more won't hurt...

mxmikie: dude, its going to take me a while; I can only work on it once in a while. It took me a couple hours to get the upper plenum off...I could do it way faster next time. Nick and fasteddy: Yeah, when I first started researching this I was convinced I'd use compressed air...now I'm going to use rope, for sure. There's a good chance I'll have to stop in the middle of the job for days at a time, not to mention fumbling with the springs and keepers possibly dropping one in. Nick: thanks for the video, a picture's worth a thousand words on the rope insertion technique. More later. Wish me luck. BTW...is there anything I should do to/look for with the plenum/throttle body now that they're removed (i left the throttle body attached to the plenum). I plan on replacing the PCV valve
