For us the IFS is a challenge to keep alive off-road, but the back is even more important for strength and needs fabulous wheel travel to make up for the limited front IFS travel. Production IFS/IRS combo 4x4's are simply not practical for hard wheeling. Forest and Desert tracks, sure, but not trail riding, rock crawling, ect. Folks make IFS/IRS buggies, but those designs would not work in a production vehicle. Even a Hummers huge A-arms have little travel and common failures.

Body Damage is Cool
If the Montero comes back, it will be a bigger Prius. This is the new way. Gen 3's didn't stand a chance to a gen 1 or 2 because of there IRS. Any body who uses there montero for hard wheeling knows this just makes twice the work to keep a reliable 4x4.

I know many on this board would like to see a rock crawling machine but I am fine if the Montero returns as a very capable SUV like the current Land Cruiser. I am also shocked how many of you underestimate how capable and robust the Gen III Montero is.

At this time Mitsubishi is not interested in bringing the Gen IV Montero to the States. If we get the Montero it will be the Gen V Montero. The Gen V is scheduled to be released next summer as a 2015 model.

This is why there is speculation the Montero will be reintroduced next summer. I would expect to hear an announcement over the next few months.

When I see a Gen III on the Sierra Carnage....then I will believe it.

I agree with Spence.
How many would take a new vehicle and go rock cruising? On the other hand how many would take the same vehicle on a weekend trip to the mountains, beach or the desert for a little off road fun?

People who buy jeeps or FJ cruisers?

Well It's more like i'm never going to take my wifes Forester into any real 4 wheeling nor will it ever get to do any real 4 wheeling once it gets a little older. Some of us think about keeping a machine in service for a long time, I won't buy a truck that i can't use to it's fullest. once it's aged a bit you'll wish you had a real 4x4.

The weekend light duty stuff is what Endeavors and Outlanders are for.

Maybe I am in the minority by wanting a nice modern SUV for daily driving and overlanding. I prefer overlanding because it better suits my personal and family goals. That being said I have done my fair share of rock crawling over the years and have many good memories, but it is not as family or budget friendly.

Not to bash but a G-class is not modern at all much like the JK, old tech on a new truck at a premium price. Second the current Montero, JK and G-class are not budget friendly like their roots. Auto makers just know they can rape us because we're dumb, "here have this old 70's technology with a new body but pay the new tech price".
Obviously that's not the case with Mitsubishi unfortunately because even if they sold a new Montero based on the old 80's-90's stuff for 70k I could still buy one a year or 2 after it's original sale for 10-15k <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

No offense taken, I love my G500 and it is not going anywhere anytime soon. It's my baby. The G500 seems to be great balance of old and new which I love.

I am looking more for my wife. The wife wants more kids and she pregnant with kid #4 and I dont see her stopping any time soon. Her little Jetta Sportwagon's days are numbered if she plans on having more kids. As for the G500, it seats 9 so it should be around for many years to come.

I would love to see the Montero reintroduced because it would meet my needs. If not, I will look at getting a very low mileage Gen III for the wife.

Over landing is about all I do. And in my book Gen II Monteros and the Late 80's to early 90's Full size cruiser are the only rigs reliable enough and tough enough for the task. Overlanding is the most difficult, demanding type of wheeling due to being loaded all the time, facing any obstacle, and long time on the trail with no tow home. The Sierra carnage is overland style wilderness wheeling...and it takes a serious rig.

Rubicon has its place, but as was mentioned still not very modern overall and has limited space.
