Hi all!!!!
Long time so post. I hope everyone is doing well. I have been hiding away working on my tenure stuff. 2.5 weeks to the deadline!! Might get some Montero time after that
Our Gen1 has been quite happy sucking up gas for a while now. I have been really impressed. This week it developed a starting problem. Everything will be fine and then all of a sudden, nothing. No dash lights, nothing to the starter. I cleaned up the batt cable clamps and it fired up. Put my tools away, tried again and nothing
I replaced the batt cable clamps and the batt neg cable with a nice fat 2ga cable. Fired it up multiple times. It sat for a few hours and my daughter took it to a friend's house. Got back in it...nothing! I went and checked the batt clamps, and the main fusible link was not as tight as it could be. Tightened it and the truck fired right up.
Can the main fusible link be in a state where it works inconsistently? May be I am missing something else obvious. I'm not sure if this is related, but the radio goes off when the headlights are turned on
All ideas/advice is welcome
Thanks!
Reuben

Oh, damn, the limey's back again...
Something is not right with the total circuit, positive to truck and back to negative post. Did you use a terminal cleaner that brushes post and clamp? Have you cleaned the fusible link connections? They live close to the battery, and are prone to corrode. Also check engine block grounds and the plastic part of the ignition switch.
The loss of radio when the lights go is indicative of a bad connection somewhere, or at least one with high resistance.
I've found the kind of failure you describe is almost always battery terminal corrosion...
Welcome back, Reuben!

Use dialectric grease on the clamp/terminal contacts, too?

I will check those things out a report back. Batt terminals are clean and shiny (batt only a few months old), clamps are new. It's good to hear from old friends

I was going to say a broke wire until you brought up the radio. I have to go eith fasteddy on what you've described. Good luck!

Welcome back, Reuben! [/quote]
I'd go with this idea too. I had same issue a couple years ago and replaced the fuseable links. Moved them up to the fire wall in a terminal block.

Just last week my Raider wouldn't start. The corrosion had gotten out of control and even though I cleaned everything up, it would not start. Had to be a new battery cable. I also had to re-end one of the fusible links since the ring terminal nearly fell off of it. Good luck

You can get circuit killing corrosion where the wire enters the dast lead battery terminal.

Hi all,
I finally got around to looking at the truck. Thanks for your suggestions. I think the issue before was the fusible link because it sat for a few days and fired right up. Anyway, I cleaned everything up and all seems to be well. I also cleaned the engine ground.
Still got that strange problem with the radio though. I am only concerned about it incase it suggests a bigger problem.
