RedCar has been kinda neglected throughout the years but he's still going strong! 1st step is some new shoes!!

These BFG's have lasted 13 years!!! but it's time. Has anytime put 33x10.5x15 on a SWB gen1??? and if so, how's the handling?

Also, it's time to yank out this darn AUTO trans!!

Maybe a few of you remember my epic battle doing the conversion from the manual to the V6 auto on the turbo.

While it's nice, it sucks up too much power. Time to put in something better!!

What's the most bulletproof 5sp mitsu trans out there?

v5m31 would be the one to have BUT we didn't get it state side but if you choose to import one get if from a pajero with a 4m40 they came with the 4.234 first gear that tranny is a beast!! You'll also need the bellhousing from a 4d56 with the same tranny behind it.

State side v5mt1 came behind gen 1 v6's, gen 2's, and sport's the newer the better once again you'll need a 4d56 bellhousing to bolt to your 2.6 plh has/had one up for sale.

I assume it's been done in a SWB before? I hate being the first!! Doing this V6 auto from a Gen2 into the Gen1 SWB Turbo was a nightmare (hence the title of my old thread).

But I have multiple bellhousings still for 4 cyl and 2 diff 6 cyl(waterjet plates) as well that'll mate up to the 2.6

I guess biggest concern is driveshafts and rear mounting.

Time to put on the BIG BOY PANTS!! and start looking!

thanks for the info!

I like the 33's on mine. Handles pretty good, removed both sway bars, and it does ok on road. Not a slot car, but I have something else for that.
With a 2" bodylift, they work real well.

jason your gonna need the gen 1 5spd crossmember aswell i think the 4cyl 5spd member is the same as the v6 but make sure just get the v6 5spd member. shouldn't be a problem as far as the swap goes since yours was stick to begin with OH reminds me you need to snag the swb v6 5spd driveshafts aswell. I think that pretty much covers it.

Thanks guys! I'm going down today to get the new tires..

Then then trans fun begins. As for the crossmember, it'll be a DIY again like the Auto-conversion was.

I just miss all that power, but hopefully now... no more blown out 5th gears!

Jason,

I also ran 33's on my red gen I 2 door (v6) with a 2" BL & removed the anti-sway bars. It felt fine.

I know it seem pretty clearly stated, but I want to reconfirm as this is something new to me. The 4D56 5spd tranny bellhousing is all that is needed to bolt on a US V6 5-spd to a 2.6 I4? (Other odds and ends aside, like the drive shafts.)

I have been sitting on a spare 2.6 MT in case the current one were to go. If there is a readily viable V5MT1 route, I'll part with that tranny to make room in the garage...

I've searched for a long, long time, and here's what I've found (disclaimer - I don't know everything).

I have never found the v5mt1 behind a 4d56 or 4g54. I found the v5m31 behind the 4d56 in Europe.

I got most of this info from a set of shop manuals on mitsu manual trannies, which I think I got on mitsubishilinks.com, but I'm not sure fer sure...

Perhaps some of our Ozzie friends could chime in.
