Hi all,
Just ain't my week First had a reoccurring starter issue on the gen2 that required a tow and now the gen1 will not idle. It worked fine last night, but this morning it backfired in the exhaust while starting and would not idle. It behaves in the same way if I unplug the main harness from the carb. Also, if I hold the gas pedal enough to keep it going the rpms oscillate about 4-600 revs and I can hear popping in the exhaust. If I push the revs up (say 4k) it seems fine. It starts fine too, but needs gas pedal.
I would greatly appreciate some help!!

How does exhaust smell while running? Acrid or gassy? Has it been sitting or has it been driven regularly?

Not noticed any unusual exhaust smell. It has been driven daily since we did the trans swap. Zero idle issues. This just came totally out of the blue!

Oxygen sensor? Dizzy mechanical advance sticking?

Didn't have an O2 sensor when we got it. It's definitely misfiring, but it's worst if I disconnect any of the plug wires.
Could it be a vacuum leak?

cycle the electrical connectors to the carb.
It's a feedback carb, with a mixture solenoid valve that controls about half of the fuel supply. It really should have a ohtwo sensor on the downpipe.
I suspect a clogged jet in the carb, perhaps the idle jet, or a stuck float that is dumping fuel and making it too rich.
If the mixture is off, you should be able to smell it. Starving for fuel will make the exhaust eye burning acrid. Over rich will smell like unburnt gas at the tailpipe. You need an assistant to keep it running while you do the sniff test.
One further thought. Test the throttle position sensor.

Hi Eddy, The exhaust really doesn't smell of anything. I did discover that the butterfly at the top of the carb is always open and I can keep the engine running by feathering it close to closed. Here's what it sounds like at the Tail pipe Seems like a terrible misfire

That butterfly is the choke, not the limey choke, the rednek American choke. Your running video sounds like it lacks colds start enrichment, which is consistent with a stuck open choke. It's time to take the air cleaner off and start fiddling with the choke linkage. When cold, it should snap shut when the throttle is opened.
If it is the stuck choke, it should smooth out when the engine warms up.

Thanks. Yeah I took the aftermarket air cleaner off and made it run feathering the choke butterfly until the top rad hose was hot, but it still gradually died over the course of a minute.
I will check the choke linkage. An old fashioned manual choke would be so much better!

Hi all, I have struggled to find time to look at this problem. However, today I started labeling and pulling the vac lines. Several are plugged with a screw. No idea why, but I think I will just replace the carb as the general performance was not great (i.e. a headwind made a significant difference ). Just have such limited time to mess with it at the moment. What you all think is best? Thisor This Does the Weber kit have everything I need? Is there much difference between the two? Thanks!
