 stalling downhill

I have a Mitsubishi Montero 4x4 4dr, I did a tune up, but it stalled going down a very steep grade repeatedly causing the steering and brakes to diminish dangerously on sharp curves, my only fix was to go downhill in the lowest gear in 4x4, then the engine did not stall. Is this the solution or it there something else one can do to prevent this dangerous situation? Thanks.

It should idle at a steady 700rpm. What happens when you rev it to say 2-3k rpm then let it drop straight down to idle speed?

thank you for your reply, yes it is an automatic, it may be idling a bit high actually and I will check that (although it sounds okay and runs fine otherwise), when it was tuned up it was not by someone that familiar with this vehicle, it drops down fine when revved back to the original speed, thanks for the information on the idle speed

Is this a 2.6 4cyl? What was the fuel level in the tank?

no its the 6 cyclinder, the longbed 4 door version, fuel was high, I had been on the highway for hours so it was hot, pulled onto a steep windy mountain road and it kept stalling out, so I put it in 4x4 low which seemed to keep it idling without stalling, probably need to adjust the idle a bit,
I am not very mechanically-minded nor truck saavy, just try to keep a good field vehicle running and safe as best I can. Thanks.

I cleaned the throttle assembly really well and it had made a big difference in how it runs and it is not making any hints of stalling so far. Thanks again. Any one have a cabin light for a Montero 4d 6v 1990? Thanks.

I hope you blocked the idle air port when you cleaned it. TB cleaner onto the ICM is the primary cause of ICM failure, and sometimes when an ICM fails, it shorts out the ECU...
