 Tire size's 31" vs 33"

Getting the Wheeling Fever

I have the stock 31"s on my 94 SR, thinking about 33"s how much difference will I see with the larger size, thinking of some form of mud tires for crawling around in death valley, some really rough roads/trails, and crawling over the really rough stuff, washouts and boulders in the roads, not quite what most would call rock crawling, but crawling over rocks... Suspension is stock as well. I guess what I'm wondering is what it will effect, and how much.
94 montero SR 3.5. 33" BFG TA KO's, OME HD rear springs, front T-bar crank.
93 600 Katana. stage 1 jet kit, Uni foam air filter
02 honda shadow. "for when the woman wants to go with"

What width 33s? 10.5 or 12.5?

33's are a fairly small tire in todays world of 40" tires. Since even the average off-road tire size is so much larger then yours, 33" tires will give a serious improvement off-road. They will help you get closer to other's ground clearance, protect the vehicle with wider tires, more stability, ect. Negligible effects for highway performance.

Check http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=7 for a wealth of information about tires. On the positive side, more ground clearance and increased Offroad performance. The downside is increased rpm and loss of highway performance. If you change tire size, consider the rims. A 10.50 and 12.50 tire of the same diameter can result in different overall height on most stock rims. The above link provides a lot of info to consider....

33's are a fairly small tire in todays world of 40" tires. Since even the average off-road tire size is so much larger then yours, 33" tires will give a serious improvement off-road. They will help you get closer to other's ground clearance, protect the vehicle with wider tires, more stability, ect. Negligible effects for highway performance. Here's another view. I ran 31's, 32's and 33's on my Gen 2.5 and saw very little difference off road, except the 33's rub and provided lackluster power. 32's were the best fit for that truck. If you go with the 33's get wider rims, or run 10.5's and a different backset and do a body lift. The folks who are running the big tires, 35's, 37's etc. have also change their gearing. Have you been off road with your current tires? How did they perform? I've never seen a Montero with 40" tires?

Actually, all things being equal, increasing tire diameter decreases RPM's to achieve the same speed. John B.

You don't really need to change the gearing on a Gen 2 to run 35's. I didn't. It would help, but it's not necessary. One of these days I'll get 4.90's, but I'm good with the 4.625 right now. And yes, I know the Gen 2.5 messed up everybody's fun with the 4.27 ratio. John B.
