Need a Spot
Greetings, I would like to flat tow my 1989 Raider behind my RV and not sure how I can do it as its an automatic. I was told I could put it in "false neutral" , a position between 4 H/L and 2H and make sure it doesn't move. But barring that what do I have to do to tow it for long distances without wrecking something? I don't want to buy a trailer or a dolly. I have had trouble finding the correct answer to this question. Any assistance would be appreciated http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/images/icons/guilty.gif

remove the driveshaft while towing it. it's not that involved to remove it and install. I can remove a driveshaft in about 5 mins... 14mm and 17mm wrenches if I remember off hand, unbolt it and slip it out of the transfer case and throw it in the back.

It can be done. The a/t transfer case does not have the detent on the shift rail that the m/t tcase has, so you have to take stuff apart and grind a notch in the rail to hold the shifter in neutral. The only other method is to unhook the driveshaft from the rear diff as above, except that I would leave the front end in the tcase and just tie the rear end to one side clear of the rear diff, otherwise you will leak tcase lube.

Hi That was quick is that all I have to do!! Wow that would be wonderful and no damage to anything that way. Will the transfer case leak after the shaft is removed? Do I have to plug it up or anything?

last time I dolly towed my Raider, I just stuffed a rag in it. If you tow often, I would get my hands on a slip yoke side from a junkyard and tie it into the transfer case with some bailing wire so nothing leaks and your seals stay in good shape. As eddy says, you can tie the shaft up. I just don't trust leaving it tied up on the poorly paved highways of PA.

I was wondering about that...is that what some refer to as a "false neutral"? Once its positioned properly as determined by whether the car will move in gear I guess I could put a hinge cover over it to keep from moving or grind it out as you suggest. Great ideas! I wish I had come to this site sooner as I have been going round and round on this! Thank you!

Simply undue the rear u-joint and securely hang the DS. I've flat-towed many Mitsus hundreds of miles this way.

Drain the transfer case (you know it needs new fluid anyway, right?) and pull the driveshaft. Throw it in the back and go.

This. Exactly. Disconnect the Driveshaft at the axle, and leave it in the transfer case. Ratchet strap it up to the frame.....

Tow your heart out.

All of these answers are great for one or two trips, but are not worth a dime if you tow all the time. Who wants to lay on the ground when it wet or nasty outside?

The answer is get a driveshaft disconnect or trade yours for a 5 speed.

Finding the neutral and locking it in place might be durable, but if it pops out you are replacing the transmission.
