The WGS84 is quickly becoming the de-facto standard for coordinates as that is the base format for ESRI GIS which is used by local, state and federal governments to establish all mapping data.

However, BLM is still hung-up on NAD27; but they are beginning to shift to WGS-84. Forest Service is quickly switching to WGS-84.

UTM will be around as long as there are 7.5 minute topographic maps...
