Getting the Wheeling Fever

The last time I heard this it was on my 04 Toyota sr5 prerunner with the v6, I went to the shop expecting to have a belt changed and it ended up being my crankshaft. Thankfully, that time, I had the extended warranty so I didn't have to shell out the $1800 for basically a new lower end on that Toyota....now to my monty....its a 91 four door and everyone on this forum has been very helpful with the past problems I have had so thank you in advance. When I start her up in the morning for the past week or so she will squeal like a belt is out of wack or similar. The whining or squeal increases with rpm's so when I slow down it gets progressively lower in volume. My drive to work is about 9 miles, by the time I get to work and the engine is at proper operating temp, its gone. I have looked at the belts, they don't seem overly tight or loose. Its obviously hard to determine where the squeal or whining is coming from theres just too many moving parts up there. Anybody ?

If you want to rule out the belts, take an old candlestick and rub it on the belt(s) while the engine is running (be careful). Report back.

Ha ha, yeah, auto parts stores have a spray for belts. Kind of messy but it quiets them down.

What is the visual condition of the belts? Do they look new or old and worn? Any cracks in them?

I was told to never use the belt sprays out there. Any comments on that subject would be helpful. The belts look allright, any comments on the crankshaft possibility ?

You can use belt sprays on v-belts but I wouldn't suggest it with serpentine belts.

I applied belt dressing to my v belts and when I started her up the squeal was gone for 10 seconds...then it was back, progressively louder. At operating temp and 900 rpms , no squeal, as soon as you give her some pedal, she starts squealing. I drove her around the block and no change, I ordered new belts and will install tomorrow. Any other suggestions ? Tensioner ? Water pump ? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Good idea to replace your belts. They're probably glazed over at some point. Check your pulleys too before you put on the new belts. Doesn't hurt to rough them up with some sandpaper, especially if you know which one is squealing.
