Did anyone else here know this? I had no idea that they put a part-time 4WD t-case in any Monties after Gen I.

My bro has an 02 XLS and it is giving him trouble with the tcase engaging on its own. I am telling him to put it in AWD for a weekend trip until he can get it sorted out. He is telling me his tcase shifter doesn't have 4HiLoc. I am telling him it has to. He sends me a pic and of course he's right. I then pull a VIN and look up in ASA and see the parts explosion without the center diff parts. Just a straight shaft like on Gen Is and earlier Sports.

I can't help but feel disapponted by Mitsu. To sell an 01-02 ten years after Active-Trac came out and not put it in the XLS. I wonder how many people who aren't learned enough to know bout them because they had heard about fullsize Monteros and AWD/4WD?

Right, that's why I was telling mt bro that he has AWD, etc. But yours is a 3.8L. Every Gen III that I have ever seen was either 3.8L or a 3.5L Limited, and our 03 20th as well, all of which have had the Active-Trac tcase shift pattern. Never saw a 3.5L XLS in person before.

I am still rather dismayed as my brother lives in Colorado. He has had two Monteros before, though he knows little about them aside from what I convey. I would have told him to not get an 01-02 XLS and go with Active-Trac. Actually, I did counsel him to go 03+ for the 3.8L...
