So, the FSM doesn't have anything to say about the timing gear or sensor blade other than to show the parts, so, I'm assuming the sensing blade can be inserted in either orientation. Still wondering if its common for the timing gear to come off with the pulley b/c all of the references I used didn't show or speak of this being the case. Anyway, I'll test start it next weekend. Pretty sure it'll run. I'll let you know....

Possibly they were just stuck together. They are not one piece. As long as you didn't take they upper gears off they should be lined up right. Only timing issue maybe # 1 Cylinder is TDC or Bottom dead center??? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

I did a similar thing when doing my timing belt. I just hand rotated the cams (with a wrench), and hand rotated the crank as well. You have to watch out, because the cam lobes will force the cam to continue to swing around. The passenger cam (if I recall correctly) was pretty easy to get on the mark, and keep it there.... but the drivers side cam was kind of difficult to get it to sit on the mark and just balance there.
Just be sure to hand crank the engine (remove spark plugs to make it much easier) several times to make sure that everything stays lined up.

I rotated the engine 8 full turns after getting the belt on...no interference and all marks remain aligned. I have a lot of stuff to bolt back on, but I'm going to see if it will start briefly because I'm not sure of the crank sensor. Thanks again for the extra keepers, the VSS job was a success!!

OK, got it back together and running....SWEET!! Just in time for desert season. Now just to change the fluids and get some tires. Thanks to everyone here, and especially to you nckwltn. Sending those extra keepers was awesome! Maybe we'll meet on the trail sometime. BTW, do you have the special crankshaft pulley tool or did you improvise? I used a strap wrench to hold the pulley while my buddy graciously stepped in to torque the bolt. Difficult, and I'm sure not the best thing for the harmonic balancer...any brilliant ideas?

I used a chain wrench to hold the pulley in place. Strap wrench would be better... but it worked just fine.
I don't see how it could cause any problem, its doing basically the same thing as the special tool, just gripping the pulley from another position.
Also, glad to help! the whole job isn't too bad, just takes time.

I am mid way through this as well on my 99. Glad everything worked out. I fell prey to the wrong rear cam seal (instead of an o-ring) and I am waiting on the heater pipe o-ring to arrive. I do have the special tool and bought bar/lever valve spring compressor as well. Which spring compressor did you use?
