I did a similar thing when doing my timing belt. I just hand rotated the cams (with a wrench), and hand rotated the crank as well. You have to watch out, because the cam lobes will force the cam to continue to swing around. The passenger cam (if I recall correctly) was pretty easy to get on the mark, and keep it there.... but the drivers side cam was kind of difficult to get it to sit on the mark and just balance there.

Just be sure to hand crank the engine (remove spark plugs to make it much easier) several times to make sure that everything stays lined up.


For me it was actually the passenger cam that was difficult to balance b/c of spring tension. I rotated the engine 8 full turns after getting the belt on...no interference and all marks remain aligned. I have a lot of stuff to bolt back on, but I'm going to see if it will start briefly because I'm not sure of the crank sensor.
