I just swapped in a 4d56t into a Montero and it is running good but...I performed the injection pump mod (removed spacer from plunger and cranked wheel in pump slightly) and regardless what I set the boost at with the manual boost controller it seems I am not getting any change in fuel. No matter how much I turn the wheel in the pump, so whether I am boosting 9 psi or 23psi the power output seems about the same. I haven't touched timing at all yet. IDEAS???

Your pump is not adjusting properly because it old and worn out. You need to rebuild the pump so to functions properly.

Engine seems to be like new, bought it from an importer, although I do understand that it may have been sitting for a great while on a pallet. Weird that it runs perfect otherwise though? Is there another pump that would be an upgrade?

It's a good looking engine. From my experience there are several major indicators these pumps are in need of a rebuild. It could be leaking fuel, not responding when adjusted, poor fuel mileage. You also have a 4d55/56 expert in Burbank, CA. Mike Warme knows more about these little things than anyone in the country. You can send him an email at www.mikewarme@yahoo.com

As far as an upgrade, I think the pump you have is fine, it just need a good rebuild. I am guessing the injectors, turbo and a few other parts are in need of some TLC.

Thanks, I appreciate the reply. I will have to look into the pump and injectors then!

What scares me about these used JDM engines is they are cleaned prior to shipment. After they pressure wash these engines it is difficult to tell anything at all.

This one had been sitting for a LONG time too, so long the rockers must have had pitting and once it had been run for a few miles the cam got worn down badly. So they paid for a new loaded cylinder head for me, a roller rocker head. Hopefully it bolts up when it gets here Monday!!

These are just the issues you are aware of. I am certain that most of the other components including the pump are in need of a replacement or rebuild. My guess is this engine has between 200-300K miles, not the 50-60K that the importer claims. This is pretty typical from my experience that these engines are not worth the money, but it is good that they are working with you.
