my Raiders front diff is completely worn out and I don't feel like rebuilding it. So I am looking into chopping my IFS off and going solid axle. Ive talked to Toasty about this a bit, and figure the cheapest route would be a Waggy axle leaf springs, and then eventually get more complicated suspension down the road. I just need to find the right axle before I start with my cutting torch Yup! We're on the same page!

Anyone know hot to ID my ring gear size without droping the 3rd? The 96 SR only came with the 3.5L DOHC engine so that ring gear should be a 9.5" gear with a 4.6x:1 r&p ratio.

Its from a grand waggy and drivers side drop obviously. The guy i bought it from had it under an xj and doesnt know the year either. Im halfway cutting the coil buckets and mounts his guy put on it. BTW this axle had a nasty hack job that involved high steer without flat top knuckles... It was nasty... I already have flat tops and will be replacing all the wearable parts anyways. Shafts are good.

Right on man sounds like a cool project. I think the straight axle is a good swap because you rid of the cv's and all the week sh*t that would break under hp or big tires for sure. What are you going to do about the 5 lug bolt pattern?
(Update) Google searched and found this in a forum.
I did a Dana 44 out of an 89 Wagoneer as they are stronger and are also 6 lug rather than 5 x 4 1/2. Rusty's Offroad sells the upper control arm brackets needed to attach to the differential to make it work and also the spring buckets and shock perches pre-fabbed. All you need to do is find a buddy that's good at welding and you can have it setup pretty easily.

The AMC-era Wagoneer should be passenger side drop and 6-lug. The Chrysler-era Wagoneer should be driver side drop and 6-lug. When disc brakes were added to the FSJ in 1975, there was a switch from 5-lug (drum) to 6-lug for the 1/2-ton.
Baldy used the coils and DS drop D44 from a 78/79 F-150 and swapped on 6-lug outers. Look up his posts on the subject of his D50.
