I mis-read your post, thought you weren't getting the fuel pump to run.

Today I pulled the exhaust manifold off the 2.4 in the '86. I noticed the two end studs were broken off at the cylinder head (of course I have extras...somewhere). I figure now I'll have to paint the mani, shield and downpipe since...what the he!!. Why not. Here's another example of a well-though-out stock system. Cylinders 1 and 4 pair and 2 and 3 pair, then exit the mani into the downpipe separately, blending into one pipe about 18" later. Factory header, and I can't see how the aftermarket could've made something better. Lighter, yes, but better flowing, I doubt it.

Looks like it's over to the Mesa Pick-N-Pull tomorrow. I don't think the power steering bracket is going to come through from Mitsubishiparts.com, since my invoice for the pulley says 'canceled' next to the part number. It shows the same next to one of the underhood labels I ordered, too, but I did get the one that shows the emissions tubing schematic so I can paste it over the G54B one that's there now for clarity, and authenticity, dang it. I also want to try to find a round air can for the stock round air filter and one solenoid for the evap canister since one of my solenoids has a snapped off nipple (ouch!). I'd like it to pass emissions. Maybe if I'm lucky I can get a glimpse of what the stock arrangement is for the charcoal canister set-up, since that's about the only thing I'm left with a question on for that system.

Ordered an exhaust mani gasket and also (hope you're sitting down)...an Airtex E8228 fuel pump for the Type R/Turbo Raider. This is actually an improvement over the former recommended piece from the turbo bible, in that it has 5/16" inlet and outlet connections to match up with what is used on the rest of the truck. Otherwise, specs are identical. I also added in an Oh-2 sensor for the same, since I seem to have lost the last one I had, along with the little mounting plate for it, thankfully the sensor comes with that part. Belts and hoses are on the way for the '86 as well.

I made my tools and time pay me today by also replacing the crap job somebody did on my neighbor's 1968 VW bus when they "redid" his fuel line. They used the original equipment sort-of braided fuel lines, added an in-line, aftermarket filter, and didn't clamp anything. The line came loose at the filter and all his fuel dumped out; he's lucky there was no catastrophic fire. I flared a metal section of the line, as they had simply put the flexible line on there, friction-fit, then I used quality hose and clamped everything, even replaced the hose from the fuel pump to the carb, then zip-tied it all up out of the way of everything. I have about $20 in parts in the job and haven't given him a labor bill, but his last name is Kitchell, if that means anything to you local guys who know about commercial construction. He'll take care of things and probably get me more work of some type.

Look for my now-daily update tomorrow!

Oh, Toasty, no new CEL today. Everything's been great with the '95.

Made it to Mesa Pick-A-Part today. Got the fan shroud, which I see doesn't fit (too narrow). I did score the power steering pump and bracket, then noticed the water pump pulley was different, so I grabbed that too; it has an extra groove on it for the power steering belt.

I decided to get the charcoal canister, as it has two nipples instead of the truck's three, and I don't want any yahoos at emission giving me cr@p for having one capped off because they don't know any better. Also decided to get the brake booster hose, since they have a check valve in them to allow the booster to hold vacuum after the engine is shut off and after it builds vacuum while driving even when the engine isn't developing vac, like full throttle. Got the heater hoses, since I noticed Rock Auto doesn't have them (funky shapes).

And I decided to get an alternator out of a '99 Galant. From not-so-close checking, the bolt pattern lines up, but the plug on the back is different, as in it has four wires instead of the Monty/Mighty Max's two. I did get the plug and a few inches of wire, so hopefully I can figure it out. The Galant had a sweet looking 16 valve four cylinder in it with a n-i-c-e looking factory header. I guess that's a VR4?

Now cleaning up parts and trying to get the new head studs in.

Oh yeah, I ordered a timing belt set, water pump, o-ring and gasket, thermostat and gaskets this morning as well.

I love parts.

Not unless there was a turbo hanging off of it.

Did you happen to notice any SRs in the yard during your parts pickin'?

Oh, O.K., I didn't know what a VR4 was, really, I guess. Didn't see a turbo, but didn't look for one, either.

No SR's that I could tell from their inventory on-line, but then again, I didn't ask when I was there. I only went to that one yard because Toasty told me about a specific truck that had the parts I needed. It had them, at least almost everything. I'd still like to really find a proper Mitsubishi transmission cooler.

I do know the stock Mighty Max alternator isn't so mighty, so I thought I'd take a swing with this one. From all indications at the Rock Auto site, it's 90 amp also. Nice. Double the output of stock for my thunderous stereo (actually, this '86 has the best cheap stereo I've ever put together). Brian's (DR1665?) write-up of how to make these work seems pretty straightforward, maybe even more easy with this vehicle. I looked after the earlier post and saw the apparent four wires for the Galant plug had been spliced down to two, so I think it's all there. Unless I blow it up, that is.

Picked up some engine paint and some header paint. Going with gloss and flat black on this one. Maybe I'll even do the valve cover in black. How dumb is that? I mean nobody does it, as far as I remember. Can't be any dumber than my '87 Turbo with the gold valve cover and black gloss fasteners. THAT paint ought to be plenty cured, since I painted it nearly a decade ago and left it in the back of the Raider, out in the sun.

Galant VR4 = 4 door AWD turbo Eclipse, but with high-end trim and in far more limited production.

All I know is I got a 90 amp alternator! That does sound like a fun car, though.

I painted a bunch of stuff today. Flat black header paint on the two exhaust pieces, gloss engine black on the air cleaner (oval) can, fan shroud (Montero's), power steering pump and bracket, pulley and a couple other little parts. I also sprayed the engine down with degreaser (smelled just like Scrubbing Bubbles, which somehow, I forgot about) and blasted off the driveway.

Got five different boxes from Rock Auto today. One more due tomorrow and another in a couple-few days.

Oh yeah, had to put a bunch of parts under cover since it's supposed to rain here coming up. 20% chance starting tonight, 100% Friday (which means it just might), 50% Saturday. At least it's free water for the grass.

Neighbor wants me to do more work to his VW. Steering and shift linkage are "loose" as he put it. I have no complaints. He agreed to the $120 bill I gave him for the last job ($20 materials, 3 hours time).
