Water pump on v6 leaking again, can I just take off the tension pulley and replace the pump? #1065713 11/01/13 11:49 PM

I was able to do basically the same thing you are asking. The tension pulley for the 93-94 v6 is different than the 90-92 v6, so not sure if this will work for you.
After draining the coolant and getting back into it, I was able to remove the tension pulley, replace water pump, then slowly tighten the bolts for the tension pulley to get it back on (about a 1/4 turn on each bolt at a time).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply! I have a '90. So very little of the timing belt is disturbed when just getting at the pump, is that what you are saying? Just take off the tensioner and I was going to mark the timing belt and get it to TDC just in case anything goes wrong.

That is correct. I also put it at TDC just in case. The belt shouldn't move off the cam gears, and I was able to get the tension off the water pump enough to replace it.
Making sure no antifreeze got on the belt was kinda tricky, but it's doable.
