Hi All,

After many months, my brother finally got his montero out of the shop and had been driving it around infrequently between visits. New fluids, new front end, new shocks, new cv's, Aisin manual hubs, engine work, etc, etc.

With the winter weather finally upon us been using 4h a lot. Suddenly noticed a gradual loss of 4H in the past day. Started out fine with full engagement every time and no power loss. Over time there has been gradual loss of power most notably from city stop and go traffic. Now no power transmitted to ground in 4H. We've tried the other modes and no issues at all. Currently using 4HLC albeit limited.

Did a search and we don't have the flashing light, no grinding/gnashing noises. We've tried sitting in Neutral and shifting, shifting on the fly, rolling forward and back...nothing. My brother is coming by after work to have me look at it. I haven't found much in the tech/archive regarding this issue. Any ideas? Thanks in Advance.

J

Getting the Wheeling Fever
If you look in the shop manuals you may find your culprit. What did they put fluid wise in the transfer case? I seem to remember the shop manual stating that 4 hi awd used a viscous clutch that may have died on you. Maybe they put in atf?

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm not really familiar with the super select system in these, but if it was the vac and switches shouldn't it affect the other modes as well? Also, if they have wrong gear oil in there wouldn't the other modes have issues as well?

I'm assuming you don't even get rear wheel drive when in 4H but get it in 2H? When I bought my 92 I was told to add GM limited slip additive to transfer case and limited slip differential. My FSM does not discuss transfer case issues much.

Hi pcc,

yep, with the gradual loss of power that includes rear wheel. I've asked my brother and he had the mechanic put the recommended fluid in per the manual.

It sounds to me as if your center differential isn't transferring power - everything else is connected mechanically with gears or shafts so to gradually loose power to front and rear wheels it's pretty much is the only possibility that I can think of.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Just finished looking underneath the truck. Driver side CV came out of housing <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />. Anyway, its back at the shop for some warranty work. I'll post an update for posterity's sake once the repairs are done if this solves the issue. Thanks again.

Your axle is going to need a new clip on the differential end of it or it'll most likely come out again.

Glad it wasn't something more serious.
