Need a Spot
Howdy Folks,
We'll after 255,000 relatively problem free miles, I blew the head gasket on my '96 T100 4x4 3.4L V6. I've owned and loved this truck since 2001 and have no intention of replacing it. My mechanic said worst case scenario(machining) would be around $2000. But now I'm putting 2K$ into a 5K$ truck that will still have 255K miles on it. Engine swap? I don't need more power but don't want less, just the easiest exchange. QUESTION(finally): What Toyota engines and years will work out for me. Also looking to swap the transmission as I as well as previous owner have done a significant amount of towing. What would you do?
Thanks for any and all advice!

You could put another 5vzfe back in yer T-100 as it would be the easiest to do.

Engine swaps are cool but they can be expensive and hard to work on if yer not familiar with the swap.

How much were you looking to throw at this engine swap project?

Just buy a low mileage 5vzfe, swap over your wiring harness, oil pan and pickup, and install.
You can get any 5vzfe from 95.5 to 04. It would be best to swap your existing throttle body over to the new motor.

x 3.

On the tranny, if it's still working for you, change the gear oil, make sure the shifter bushings are still intact.

Swap out the pilot bearing on the donor engine and resurface the flywheel and put in a new clutch before you stuff it back in there.

Thanks for all the help and advice! Hopefully I can find something in my area with low miles, sooner than later. Enjoy your holiday weekend!

This should get you started for junkyards:

www.car-part.com Don't forget you can get a 3.4 out of a Tacoma, so remember that for your search.

Whatever you do, it would seem to be a smart thing to also replace the flexplate with a brand new one. Refer to this thread to start with: http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB78&Number=1061631
and follow the various links about other discussions of failed flexplates due to metal fatigue. You got a lot of miles out of yours (more miles than many other people here).
