I did notice that on the other 2 cars and my work truck the outlet seems deeper, didn't measure them though. Second one seems to be the easiest option. I still don't know about the "pop and smoke", didn't blow the fuses in the charger or the truck. '92 Trooper S, 3.2L SOHC, 5sp, 4X4, bone stock for now.
