Alright so myself and Toasty were thinking about getting a hosting account, for pictures and possibly a club site.

We already have a hosting account given to him by a friend, but is only intended for a select few of us and to be honest the page load times are horrific. This is due to the load on the server where our galley site is hosted, and unfortunately I do not have admin control of the server.

But I get crazy discounts through the company I work for.

$3 a month for the best shared hosting account. That's $36 a year.

So I was thinking that if enough of us pitch in we could get a hosting account for 10 to 20 years. This hosting account would mostly host a PHP Gallery application for us to use for pics

What does everyone think?

I'm in. I was looking at Toasty's pics from the CK run, and noticed the horribly slow load times, keeping in mind the large file sizes. If there is a better solution, and even a club site, that would be awesome.

Just curious, but what purpose does this serve? What advantage over a free service like Vimeo or Picasa? There's still the PITA of uploading pictures to a site, then if you want to post them on here, linking them one at a time into a post on here.

I think the purpose is a collective storage for all our wheeling and tech pictures, as well as having a place to back them up.

If they are properly arranged into albums with thumbnails you could link a whole album here on the forum making it very easy to post up your pictures. As you know almost all of our historical Az Crew stuff has vanished over the years so if all of "US" had our own hosting accounts you could just drag and drop your picture files into group folders AKA "Crown King Dec 2013".

We tried this on the FTP server but it's stand alone file system is hard to use and takes a long time, with the gallery interface and multiple users it's just too slow and the thing doesn't make it easy to search through large numbers of pictures.

O.K., that makes sense, sort of, since I'm a simple son of a cave man. Where do I send my $5?

I want to get a large group of us in on this and the monies will come to me

But first I need to know how many people are down for this that way we can figure out how many years we can lock into.

And the Gallery is slow because of the load on the server itself since it is doing more than just serving up our gallery.

But yes Toasty is right. It would be a central location to keep all of our pictures, How it is organized can be decided later when I install a gallery application.

I already have a few domain names that can be pointed at the hosting account so that is no biggie.

My thought is if everyone put in $36 then they are paying for a year of hosting right there

This is what am looking at:
http://www.godaddy.com/hosting/web-hosting-new.aspx

Ultimate hosting plan is normally $14.99 a month... with my discount its only $3.00 a month

Make that a little more clear. If each person was to put in $36, they themselves would be paying for a year of hosting for the entire group, so in other words, for each person that does this, another year is added to the term.

Otherwise, if twelve people were to kick in $3/year, that would cover it for a year, just as an example.
